UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS group show. DRINKS: 2–5PM SATURDAY 24 OCT. HOURS: 11AM–5PM TH–SA, 11AM–4PM SU There is a particular kind of weight that comes from feeling safe — warm, familiar, hard to argue with. Unbearable Lightness sits inside that contradiction: the comfort of containment, and the quiet itch to know what lies beyond it. The painted imagery exposes the tension which exists inside the safest of places, when the mind allows a window to be opened; the imagining of another life running parallel to the present one. To achieve lightness in porcelain is to acknowledge the quiet weight of its creation: the peril of collapse in the kiln, the exactness of liquid slip, and the volatile physics of heat and gravity. What emerges from the fire is a porcelain body that holds memory and space. This collection explores the tension between weight and weightlessness in slip-cast porcelain. We are earth bound creatures and often feel at the mercy of the laws of nature, society, our beliefs and expectations. Can we toy with the lightness, freedom and possibilities that accompany being untethered from the solid landscape below? We can start with dreaming. Imagining letting go, seeking connection with each other, with the natural world and enjoying moments of exhilaration in the boundless sky. Yuri is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses painting, printmaking and sculpture. She has exhibited her prints widely. She has painted for many years, studying at the Julian Ashton Art School. She has been a finalist at many prestigious art prizes, notably when she was chosen as a finalist in the 2020 Archibald prize. Annarie Hildebrand is a Sydney based ceramic artist and printmaker. Her art is an exploration of geometric shapes and forms and the shadows cast by objects, expressed through the mediums of clay and print. Sabina is a Sydney based printmaker, who continues to expand her techniques in printmaking. She creates compositions with a variety of line, texture and colour, stencils, with many types of plates including zinc, copper, aluminium, lino and high-impact plastics. #painting #printmaking #sculpture #ceramics #tiliquatiliqua

Amanda Jacka explores botanical contact prints, a fascinating process which extracts plant dyes through boiling and chemicals, imprinting paper with natural hues. Janene Porter, Helen Cox and Maureen Hine use the more traditional medium of paint on canvas to depict their natural themes including landscapes and flowers. Helen and Maureen round out the exhibition with their prints, with etchings (Helen) and monotypes of flowers and foliage (Maureen). We found a lot in common, sharing an interest in art, food, fun and learning – it’s wonderful to have a support group. Maureen went on to the National Art School completing a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2023, while Helen and Janene have done TAFE and community art school courses in painting after completing their Advanced Diplomas in 2022.
